Sunday Evening

More rain than usual over here, and you can tell: there is no proper drain system in the streets! What would be a normal amount of rain in Montreal turned into huge puddle jumping contests here. Wet pants bottom...

Tried to go see Coraline this morning, and found myself staring at a huge line of people wanting to go see various films. What? On a Sunday? Before 11am? I couldn't have made it in in time, so I turned back and will try again tonight.

Continuing with the reworks of part 3, Nothing major, a tweak here and there for clarity and that's all.

I will make some minor changes in the next one, when Zhao returns to the tribe. Slight changes again, but to better show that he finally gets his firebending back (if not the skills to use it properly, heh heh).

Also having fun with the Prison stuff. This time, not really comics but really more like story notes. I do story notes two ways: just written or written with a bit of visuals. I went for the combo. Expect a lot of these, since I want to move faster through these. I will also do more comic pages when I arrive at story points I want to draw out for fun.
(because that's the only reason I even do this thing: for fun!)

I was listening to a bit too many documentaries this week about prisoners of wars. My mind went into dark corners again. Thankfully, I'm almost done with it too, yay!

Ok, enough with the Zhao torture (well, a different kind of Zhao torture anyway). Felt weird to draw that...and a bit weird posting it. Maybe because it feels off, like it wouldn't fit in the Avatarverse.

And no more documentaries about war prisoners. This is Darwin week...so I should be drawing Monkey!Zhao instead! XD

I went to see Coraline today! In 3D no less! It was cool!

There wasn't much of a line, but then again, it was 4:40 in the afternoon.

I hope you get to see it soon! It's truly a marvel! The stop-motion is so seamless I thought it was CG in several places.

I'm definitely going to see it in 3D.
In fact, I should leave now instead of typing replies.

Hey, you can do both (Monkey! Zhao and Prisoner!Zhao)

I wonder if there's a way you can fit the ocean and moon spirits in with the water cage thing. Full moon, the tide rises, and maybe, so does the water level in Zhao's cage. Maybe he either gets a bit delusional or kind of sort of dozes off, but doesn't drown. Maybe Yue is keeping an eye on him, because he did kind of sort of help the spirits, so he's almost an official guardian for them in a way. Maybe the water rises high enough to cover the short cage but Zhao remains relatively dry because they still sort of have uses for him, or something? That's a way to maintain an historical accuracy, the spirit of the Avatarverse, and that the Avatarverse (or at least the fans) like playing with Zhao.

My heart skipped when i saw these. (I'm just as addicted as you are)
Upside down Zhao IS quite amusing, and I like the doctor character.

I'm sure you can slip in a litte bit more shirtless while still being relevent to the story.
Feb. 9th, 2009 06:35 am (UTC)
Sorry to you and Arluk, but shirtlesness has to fit into the story somehow. The way I'm looking at it, there is no more shirtless scenes in the foreseable future.
Ah well, we get a little look-see once in a while.

Listen to Arluk! We require our Zhao sans shirt!

Getting eyeballed by the Zhaoster. LOL
Feb. 9th, 2009 06:37 am (UTC)
Sorry, we've filled our quota of shirtless Zhao!

I went to see Coraline at 10.00 PM last showing and there is a FREAKING LINE UP.

How is this explainable? I thought families come in middle of day showings
Feb. 9th, 2009 06:35 am (UTC)
Good news for Coraline!
Feb. 9th, 2009 04:52 am (UTC)
Weird to see happy BOUM!Lao with knowing you just killed him off. Oh how I'll miss him.

Awesome prison break pages. And yes, it's astonishing how creative people can get when it comes to torture. Just saw a documentation some days ago about that stuff. They had all kind of weird shit invented - especially in the middle ages during inquisition. D:
Feb. 9th, 2009 06:40 am (UTC)
Yeah, I kind of missed old Lao too. He deserved better.
Well, maybe not.
Oh boy! The inquisition was rough! I did some reading on the time of the witch hunt. The stuff man has invented to make people suffer...
Feb. 9th, 2009 06:25 am (UTC)
Maybe a dark corner; but reading a new entry on your journal at first thing in the morning definitely make my day!

And I really like the last cases on the prison story :)
Feb. 9th, 2009 06:40 am (UTC)
I needed to end the prison pages on a lighter note. The good doctor was willing to comply.
Feb. 9th, 2009 07:56 am (UTC)
I really like the doctor character :) You're right in that he's like a breath of fresh air.

Hope you enjoy Coraline, I saw it on Friday and really enjoyed it.
Feb. 16th, 2009 09:14 pm (UTC)
Thank you! Expect the doctor to return for a short cameo.
Did enjoy Coraline, but only saw it a weekend later. The movie kept being sold out. Yay for it!

3 page war documentary
XD there are far worse punishments. watch chinese judge series
wow... Zhao is awfully quiet/low-toned in this set

Re: 3 page war documentary
Chinese judge serie? I'll have to google it or something, never heard of it.
You are right, he is low toned. Things are happening to him but it's not him moving things. All in due time. He needs to get out there first.

I find it very ironic that as I was reading these, I was eating a banana when I got up to the part about monkey Zhao. Poor Zhaoey, he goes through nothing but pain. Ha, though it is funny to see him giving you the stink eye! I wonder how the escape artist is going to escape next time, the story is still getting good.
Feb. 16th, 2009 09:12 pm (UTC)
Hopefully, Zhao will get out of the pain inflicting cycle at some point. It's all up to him to make the decisions in that direction.
As for escaping, stay tuned...

Evil you and your ancient forms of torture!!!! Now the sadist in me totally wants to see what would happen if you put a firebender in the Brazen Bull... And I totally just realized how insanely creepy that sounds.

*slinks off to disinfect her brain of the nasty*
Feb. 16th, 2009 09:11 pm (UTC)
A firebender would possibly do well for a few minutes, but unless he-she could keep up the firebending they'd eventually get burnt.
Firebenders doesn't mean fireproof. Just ask Zuko.

Damn it all, Lady Matte. Do you have any idea what standing in water like that does do your body?

And you be quiet, Arluk.
Feb. 16th, 2009 09:10 pm (UTC)
It makes it...all pruny and wrinkly?
Feb. 10th, 2009 12:17 pm (UTC)
This has the feel of a noir detective story.
So the torture fits right in. From a reader perspective, it would help if we got a better initial view of what the prison routine/landscape is like. That way, we can join Zhao in trying to solve the mystery of what Zhao was planning. The foundry kind of surprised me, since I was imagining a prison like Boiling Rock (but w/a nastier warden), but it would fit right in with what we've seen of the Fire Nation industrial ethos if they worked prisoners to death in factories. Makes more sense to see Zhao in the foundry than digging ditches, which would be an impractical misuse of a skilled laborer. Also fits with your arc of Zhao always winding up being used, rather than the user.

Re: This has the feel of a noir detective story.
Whoops, meant to type "what Lao was planning".
