Give me the usual.

Called mom today- she's back home, feeling a bit sore and all, but walking-shuffling around and in overall a good mood.
Seems like her doctor was very happy with the operation, even very proud of the stitching he'd done.
I guess it's good to have a doctor take pride in his work. Hehe.

Sent a bunch of finished storyboards back to Montreal. I am NOT carrying all that paper in my luggage!! We're talking 34 pounds of it, and I still have more to carry back. Sheesh. I will buy an extra luggage this weekend.

Work still moving along swiftly and nicely on all side, and I could squeeze in more break time Water Tribe AU sillyness.
Can't help it, I'm having fun!

I want to move things along swiftly. No time to waste! Being lazy, all the fights happening off screen. And sillyness added, of course.
And Zhao's idea of a fair fight is slightly...off. But hey! He's making sure it will be a no firebending fight, right?

One last note: the Zhao on the last panel of page 36 was directly inspired by a Zhao sketch I kept seeing in Giancarlo's office. I just loooooved that little Zhao doodle. After drawing this, today I couldn't resist any longer and asked if I could do a photocopy of his awesome Zhao sketch.
can you believe it, I'm FINALLY starting to understand the Avatar eyestyle. About time. I'll still screw it up from time to time, but I'm getting there.

*d-die* The "take your shirt off!" comment made me snort my water. Ow...my precious sinus cavity...

Your work amazes me. ^___^ And yay for avatar! I actually did a tour last September when I did a little mini interview with Eric Homan, and he took me up through all the parts of the main studio. XD Avatar was the only show working that day. *laughs* I distinctly remember someone having a Naruto poster up in their cubicle...

That reminds me...I need to get back in touch with Mr. Homan...

Jun. 21st, 2007 09:14 am (UTC)
Quite a few Naruto posters up in different places. Some in offices, so you may not have seen those. Did they have the fire nation flags up when you visited? They're right up the stairs.
(and apologies for any sinus cavities that may have gotten hurt)

That is a _totally_ Zhao attitude. Love it.

And . . . is that who I think it is, in the last panel?!?
Jun. 21st, 2007 12:41 pm (UTC)
It is! It is! Now, is he the retired ex-heir, or is he the Firelord in "disguise"? I'm betting the former, myself, though I don't discount the latter entirely, knowing the skilled artist. Interesting how he uses Zhao's title.

I do love the "Take your shirt off!" part. *cackle*

(I also love how the owner's daughter looks so much like her parents, both.)

sodhgk i have such a crush on zhao now! And it's totally not because he's voiced by mr. issacs >_>

but seriously i can never say enough how awesome you are ;o;
Jun. 21st, 2007 03:08 pm (UTC)
Oh yeah...Mr. Isaacs and his great voice performance has nothing to do with liking Zhao *runs, pops in DVD and listens to Zhao's speech just to convince herself of that*...oh yeah
Awww, thank you, you are too kind *blushes*
Jun. 21st, 2007 10:22 am (UTC)
Oooh. That guy deserved it. *evil laugh*
(I didn't know Zhao was that strong. Probably Water Tribe training.)

That woman seems to be used to seeing such violent things.
"Take your shirt off!" LOL.

Good to hear your mum's doing well.

OMG it's Iroh!! So uhh.. he was in prison for three years, and he still hasn't escaped?

Jun. 21st, 2007 03:12 pm (UTC)
Arms are easy to break if you know how to hit-twist them right. Zhao learned a little technique or two in the survival class : "Fight a firebender: lesson one, stop them from firebending, period."

Hehe, the wife, nothing fazes her anymore. She's been seeing her share of customers througout the years. All kinds of customers.

Haha, noooo. Iroh is visiting. Hopefully, he did get out of imprisonment at some point.

Congrats bout your mom. Hahaha, have you tries stitching skin?
Jun. 21st, 2007 03:13 pm (UTC)
Nope, have never tried that. I don't think I'll ever get the chance too. Still, the doctor's enthusiasm is to be commended.
Jun. 21st, 2007 10:34 am (UTC)
AAAAAHHH! *my inner self screams wildly and giggling at the same time* (I can't scream out loud, my mom can hear me in the kitchen)

Hehehehe...Nice remark from the landlady "Take your shirt off!" Priceless!
You and Beth were right with Zhao's forge arms. <3 He actually broke the guy's arms!

IROH! Heehee...I'm in love with Iroh right now, I missed him . :) My two favorite guys are together in one panel. <3

Now...*back to normal*
Iroh maybe able to bring back Zhao's memory, or some at least. I hope, not about the insane parts. >_>;
Jun. 21st, 2007 03:16 pm (UTC)
Inner self screams are the best- I do them all the time (have to...would be very embarassing at work, with a co worker sitting right behind me).
Beth actually guessed where I was going. She's got some sort of psychic thing going on.
Even if Iroh could bring Zhao's memory back, I don't think he'd want to do that.
This is way more fun :D

"Do something!!" Hehe. Love the officer's face on the second panel of pg. 35.

And Iroh! Yay!
Jun. 21st, 2007 03:18 pm (UTC)
Thank you!
I was rather happy with that panel too. :)
Jun. 21st, 2007 12:17 pm (UTC)

So first of all, I was actually cheering "GO ZHAO!! WOO-HOO!" out loud during the fight. My fiance thinks I'm insane.

(Also: Dave sent me one of Amy's pages! SO EXCITED!)

(Alsoalso: Very glad to hear your mom's doing well! <3)
Jun. 21st, 2007 03:25 pm (UTC)
Hehe, thanks (not that we see a whole lot of fighting going on, but...ah well, cheering is good :D)
Hey, why do you think I've photocopied the drawing that inspired me for that last panel: so I could go and carry it around!
Oooh, I should be seeing Amy this friday: I am so looking forward to see her pages!!

i feel sad reading your comics.
They're really good but i can't help feel sad.

must be because of the lack of avatar these days XD
Jun. 21st, 2007 03:27 pm (UTC)
I'd blame it on the lack of Avatar.
Ah, things will pick up, with more Zhao fun :D
Jun. 21st, 2007 12:45 pm (UTC)
*belated oops there's a kid talking to me here, that's my excuse* I'm glad that your mom's doing well! If it's anything like a c-section, do not sneeze. Or cough, or laugh. Just... don't. It should get safer to do that in a few days. (Maybe it's a smaller incision -- that'd be better. O:> )

My daughter is saying that even with broken arms, "he could still kick!" She also says, "*gigglegiggle* I think that Zhao won the fight. He was pretty strong already and being a blacksmith made him stronger."
Jun. 21st, 2007 03:30 pm (UTC)
Oh no, it was a pretty big incision; at least 6 inches. My mom warned me not to make her laugh. No funny movies for her for a few weeks!

Your daughter is right- the blacksmith work gave those muscles a good exercise.
And Zhao had to leave the legs unbroken: he's not going to carry that soldier during a duel!

Glad to hear your mom is feeling good! And...wow. Yeah. That's ALOT of paper, I wouldn't want to haul that around either! ^^;;

OH MY GOD IROH! *FANGIRLSQUEE* I was wondering who was in charge of the Fire Nation three years later! XD Wonder if it's Iroh on the throne or Zuko though. *ponderous*
Jun. 21st, 2007 03:39 pm (UTC)
My back has been spared from carrying all that paper weight. I'll still have a s?$*load to carry, but less now. ouf!

I guess it is no spoiler if I said Iroh is not in charge of the fire nation. He's retired, and definitely prefers not to be burdened with too much responsibility.

"Take your shirt off!"
Ha! It makes me wonder if at some point in its history the Fire Nation was a matriarchy?

Fire Lady: "And from now on, any time hot-headed men decide to fight, they must do so shirtless so the ladies have something to look at! So it has been said, so it shall be done!"

Mmmm Zhao is hot bubbling lava.

Ahaha, "You broke my arms!" Reminds me of Monty Python's Holy Grail. If he only tried a little harder that asshole could've done some firebending with his feet! I have to say this all fits in perfectly with Zhao's personality, at no point am I thinking, oh she added something weird to my favorite character. Though I'm still waiting for the scene where he steals candy from a baby.

So you get to keep your storyboards? Thats pretty cool. I thought they'd be company property or something... 34 pounds of paper! Thats like a forest, ahaha XD
Jun. 21st, 2007 03:46 pm (UTC)
Haha, oh believe me, I kept thinking of Monty Python the whole time. But that fire nation soldier is too whiny to go "it's just a scratch wound".
Hmmm. Candy stealing scene...got to work that one in somehow.
I can't say I will not add anything weird to Zhao's persona, as he has some water tribe influence now, but I won't go toooooo weird. Kick me if I do.

Well, I can't keep the originals (sad!), but we get good copies of the boards for our files. Yay!! And I do feel like a tree murderer at this moment...

I guess one of the trick is to be loose. The next one is to think "so what if something is screwy, these are supposed to be rough work in progress like".
Plus, they are drawn relatively small: half a regular letter page, so two pages fit on a 8.5X11 piece of paper.
And I got lucky: the whole plotline just bursted into my head. Them idea bricks, when thrown around roughly, are quite good at making permanent damage.

Thanks for your good wishes. I'm still surprised at how common this operation seems to be.

Somehow, Zhao violence causes laughs: killing baby turtle seals, breaking arms...I don't know how he does it.
Next: little talk with Iroh.

Oh wow, even with fights offscreen, this is hugely entertaining! Actually not showing the action makes it almost moreso - seeing the other people's reactions and imagining what's going on, ahaha. And "take off your shirt"! XD
I totally wasn't expecting Iroh at all, but woah. Fantastic. There's so much mood in that last page. I'm continually impressed at how deftly you manage comedy and emotion throughout this.
Jun. 21st, 2007 05:31 pm (UTC)
I guesss sometimes showing less is showing more in a way. (and easier to draw too!)
Many thanks!
Jun. 21st, 2007 05:11 pm (UTC)
The innkeeper's wife cracks me up. "Nice!"

Do you know, that everything I know about the world of Avatar, I have learned from reading your comics? I still have not managed to see a single episode of the show itself. Oh, but I want to. I want to.
Jun. 21st, 2007 05:28 pm (UTC)
Oh man, what totally twisted image of Avatar I must be giving to people, heehee!
(why do I suddenly have the inkeeper's wife saying "nice" in a Borat voice. eeeep! I'm getting my mind twisted by coworkers!)
Jun. 21st, 2007 07:04 pm (UTC)
Iroh! entirely not who I was expecting, but a pleasant surprise. Very nice pages, I really like how the story is developing. Especially the cute little crush the Fire Nation girl has on Zhao. Will she show up in future panels, or is the story going to move on without her now?

Lol at the "Take your shirt off!" Something I probably would have screamed at him.
Jun. 21st, 2007 08:56 pm (UTC)
Oh yeah, Iroh is still around. T'was time to introduce other familiar faces too :)
I'm afraid we won't be seeing that young girl anymore- story moving on away from her and her family.

Re: Congratulations! You have a frothing fangirl...
I remember you! Not many flederschatten online that I know of :)
Glad you manage to find your way here. I'm thinking of keeping the water tribe AU only to LJ, rather than repeating myself all over the different places. Eh, that's just me.
Glad you're enjoying it!

I consider myself warned about your stalking :)

Jun. 21st, 2007 09:19 pm (UTC)

you are just way too good at telling this story :3
Jun. 22nd, 2007 05:44 am (UTC)
Thank you- I guess the trick is to keep having fun telling the story. I just have to watch myself and not drag on too long. Gotta learn to edit myself somehow.
Ah well, can do that later I guess.
Jun. 21st, 2007 09:25 pm (UTC)

Only 34 pounds? o0;; Or is that jsut the first shipment?
Jun. 22nd, 2007 05:45 am (UTC)
...is definitely a good one.

That's just a first shipment. And many of the other things I'll be carrying in extra luggages.

and the doctor ;)
(hey, it's recomforting that a doctor is sure he made a good job!)

Not only making sure he made a good job, but proud of it too! Nice when someone takes pride in doing their work well, especially doctors!
Jun. 22nd, 2007 03:20 am (UTC)
so Very relieved that your mum is a'ight.

My folks are also getting to around 'age' and I get deathly worried when they start getting health problems more often.. plus it also makes me afraid of my own impending ageing... :(

But on a AWESOME NOTE, Your ability to capture a levity and depth in drawing the exact essence of Zhao and everyone else.. "Zhaoness" in both image and story continues to be awesomebrainblowingawesome.
As always and forever amen.

Oh and that "Take off your shirt" woman?...she rocks. X3
Jun. 22nd, 2007 06:00 am (UTC)
Thank you for your kind thoughts about me mum.
Ah, been going through the worries too...it is unescapable. I know I'm keeping tabs of all the possible health problems I might inherit just from genetics. Eeep! Ah well, live for the moment, cherish everyday.

And many thanks also for your kind words about my work...which is really pure rampaging fangirlism (one reason I'm not showing these at work- they would sooooo tease me!!)
It is also reassuring to know I may manage to hit a few good notes with Zhao. Yay!

Jun. 22nd, 2007 08:17 am (UTC)
Good to hear your mom is well!

I notice how the OC Daughter takes more after her father in looks. Seems I take after the mom in attitude...especially on shirtless policies.

Mmm, I sense Zuko in Zhao's future. But the key question here is: WILL ZUKO TRY TO HOLD HIS HAND ALL FRUITY LIKE AGAIN? :D
Jun. 22nd, 2007 03:39 pm (UTC)
Thanks! All good thoughts towards my mom appreciated :)

The daughter indeed has more of her father looks, and a weird mix of her mother straighforwardness. Not a bitchy kind, but more of a "that's what I want, and I'm not afraid to ask you...nicely."
(so yes, take that shirt off please)

Looking in the crystal ball, to see if there is possibilities of fruity hand holds.
