Two Official Last Airbender movie posters

Last AirbenderLast Airbender

That was my first impression when I first saw these images in thumbnail size: what are these zippers on the back of their costume?
Oh wait.
It's text.

What the hey, makes me curious to see more (by more, I mean Zhao, ha ha ha!)

Just saw these on Avatar_Fans. I am still squeeling.
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:59 pm (UTC)
The second those posters appeared, I imagine quiet a few places started posting about them.
Jan. 25th, 2010 11:38 pm (UTC)
Oh man! Those posters look really cool! I wonder if I'll be able to snag one from the local movie theater when they start showing up...
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:59 pm (UTC)
I'd take a Zuko one to decorate my office :)
Jan. 25th, 2010 11:51 pm (UTC)
A;FKJDZ!!! Ok, even though I have no expectations whatsoever for this movie, I can't help but get a fangirlish thrill at seeing these! So dramatic and epic looking!!

....except for that really distracting vertical text, LOL WHAT. Who thought that was a good idea? XD
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:58 pm (UTC)
Vertical text:direct eyes, makes connection between texts, covers big empty space.
I guess that was the logic.

Those are stunning my sister sent those to me in a text. I can't wait.
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:57 pm (UTC)
By text, they would appear small- did you get the "zipper" impression too?

But it's missing one of the most important things.......

Where's Zuko's ponytail?!?! That's like having Zhao without the 'burns! :O
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:56 pm (UTC)
They've decided to put ponytails on their helmets.
And not just Zuko, the other soldiers as well (assuming Zuko does wear a helmet...which I'm not sure at this point).
Jan. 26th, 2010 12:03 am (UTC)
Haha, I thought you meant real zippers and was about to tear my eyes out trying to find them!
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:55 pm (UTC)
Ha ha, no. Just an impression!
Jan. 26th, 2010 12:39 am (UTC)
LOL zippers.

no Zukocorn? :( sad day

yeah lets see some Zhao Mr. Shyamalan!
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:14 pm (UTC)
There was a note from F.Marshall (producer) on his Twitter that we'll soon see all major characters.
Of course, Zhao thinks he's a major character. Let's see if the movie producers think so too.

Vertical text used to fill in what would look like abig empty space? (some people are afraid of big empty space, especially on promo images)
Jan. 26th, 2010 01:30 am (UTC)
Hmmm...when was the xipper invented?
Well, they have jetskis, I am sure they have the zipper. :P

Speaking of fire nation boats: those ships look really fancy. Like modern stealth ship fancy.
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:55 pm (UTC)
Hmmm now you do make me wonder if the fire nation invaded zippers, what with their inventiveness demonstrated by various mechanical machines.
(apparently, the zipper appeared in 1913)
Maybe the fire nation has velcro too!
Jan. 26th, 2010 01:33 am (UTC)
Oh my God, thank you for the pictures!*_*
Now I really want to see the movie.

There will be Zhao?
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:15 pm (UTC)
There will most certainly be Zhao. That North Pole needs invadin' and he's the man to do it.

Ha ha, glad to know it wasn't just me!
Jan. 26th, 2010 03:31 am (UTC)
The vertical text IS a bit odd-looking, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to cover my wall with these posters! the hard part will be choosing which one you want more...
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:53 pm (UTC)
Guess they've been trying to do something with that huge empty space made by their back (some people hate big empty spaces on promo posters).
Or maybe it is a small attempt at pseudo asian vertical typesetting format.
Jan. 26th, 2010 03:37 am (UTC)
What the hell kind of typesetting is that?

From a graphic designer standpoint... ew. I mean, these are GREAT photos. The colors pop, the effects are great. The stance of the characters being off to one side while you can kind of get a feel for the setting of the movie. But that text aaahhh.

I'm sad you can't see Aang's arrows.

Actually, putting the logo on their backs is kind of funny too. Makes them look like they're wearing shirts screenprinted with the movie logo /rantrantrant

I was never too good when it came to graphic design, but if my eyes mistake at first glance a small detail for something else...there's a problem, right?
They must have been afraid of the big empty space of their back.
Ha ha, now I want them wearing logo printed shirts and coats in that movie!
Jan. 26th, 2010 03:40 am (UTC)
I hate the design D:
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:19 pm (UTC)
I wouldn't go as far as saying hate (I do sort of like the Zuko poster), but the placement of the text kinda feels odd.

Not bad at all! I like the composition and color contrast. vertical letters kinda nice imo, it draws your eye and it's somethingdifferent.
And I know many fans are furious about the depiction of air as smoke, but it works in this poster... plus nice detail in the background. Conclusion: NICE! (coming from a fan who gave up on this film a long time ago!) :D
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:21 pm (UTC)
Movie poster makers do love the contrasts of blue and orange.
I was trying to think how best to depict air visibly.
Smoke could work, if Aang had just been trying to fight Zuko in poster#2.

Jan. 26th, 2010 10:23 pm (UTC)
Nice to have a sign of life from that production.
Jan. 26th, 2010 05:12 am (UTC)
They look like a combination of official photo with fan-placed text and logo...
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:28 pm (UTC)
It does its job of linking the texts together and directing the eye.
Not sure if I like it though.
Jan. 26th, 2010 09:19 am (UTC)
Haahaa, now I'm half tempted to draw the Avatarverse as if designed by Testuya Nomura, that man LOVES zippers.

It's nice of them to come out with movie posters just in time for my birthday ;p

I should really think about that Zhao Movie contest....

Ha! I didn't even think zipper, till you said it; but yea, they do.
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:51 pm (UTC)
As I said, that zipper impression caused by seeing these posters in a very small format first. Even now, seeing them bigger, that's all I think about, ha ha!
Jan. 26th, 2010 04:18 pm (UTC)

Jan. 26th, 2010 04:33 pm (UTC)
Wow...even though I keep raging inside cause the kid playing Aang isn't Asian, the posters do look cool...and they do look like zippers, lol. XD
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:50 pm (UTC)
Can't fault the graphic designers for having to work with the material given to them (but placement of type still makes me blink)
Jan. 26th, 2010 09:53 pm (UTC)
That Zuko poster looks AWESOME! The Aang poster not so much.
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:09 pm (UTC)
My heart goes to the fire invaded poster. It's more hot (yes, pun intended).
Jan. 26th, 2010 09:55 pm (UTC)
oh god save us from stacked type...other than that yeah Nice posters <3 <3

I can totally see these about 20 ft tall hanging from opposite ends of a multiplex
Jan. 26th, 2010 10:29 pm (UTC)
Or covering the whole side of a building. I've seen that done for some films.
Jan. 30th, 2010 04:50 am (UTC)
I can't wait for Zhao. Aasif Mandvi! I don't know how I will not giggle. Good, insanely happy giggling. And Ozai too, because I really really like Cliff Curtis. I've decided that my anxiety over the movie and the Water Tribe can be offset by my thinking happy excited thoughts about some of my favorite POC minor character actors all being cast as Fire Nation peeps.

I like the costumes a lot so far, though I'm not too keen on Zuko's almost-not-scarface. I kind of want to see his abusive family life PLASTERED ON A HUGE THEATER SCREEN in a kids movie just to emphasize teh evil, though I'm sure that's why they've downplayed the appearance of it in pics and posters that we've seen so far. I feel like the movie is going to be less wink-nudge-edgy-dark-happy sunshine-here's-some-abuse-and-genocide-more-happy-sunshine than the tv show was.
