Saturday, July 4th

Happy 4th of July to all the Americans. Hope you have some fun celebrations planned.
Me...I think I'll go take a nap, ha ha! Got nothing going on.

I did go to Anime Expo yesterday with Michael Chang and Tim. Since I don't have the shutterbug instinct, I didn't take any pictures. Lame me. I mean, with a ratio of about half the crowd in costume, there were so many opportunities.
Lame lame lame. Lazy and lame.
Got me a few goodies, saw only a few Avatar cosplayers. Possibly missed a whole bunch, as we kept moving around and looking at the stuff on tables.

Drawing funk slowly lifting up. I guess I'm also going through a certain dissatisfied mood. I'll just keep charging ahead until I'm out of it.
What's the old animation saying...got to do 100 000 bad drawings before making a good one.
Something like that.
Maybe I need to make a million bad drawings.

Hmmm I had the impression that the Water Tribe was monogamous. We have no example of them being polygamous although it is spoken of on Nick's website that the Earth King has many wives. Still struggling with what to give Payu's sister as a name?

Considering many native american tribes were polygamous....this isn't suprising..

The Water Tribe is mostly monogamous. as Wolfofzion pointed out, some native american tribes and inuits could have more than one wives.
Aku, with a family consisting only of daughters, would love to have a son. This would be an easy way for him to add one to his family. If Nauja was dead, he'd simply adopt Payu as his own.

Yeah, no names have clicked yet in my head for the sister. *grumble*

Well while that may be historically true, I took the fact that Arnook who is the chief and an example of one who would be capable of supporting more than one wife has been shown only to have had one as evidence that the Water Tribe was entirely monogamous.

I don't know if you have seen this site but it's great for finding names to use for characters
Behind the Name

I guess it can be interpreted different way.
After all, some Pharaohs married their sisters or even their daughters. Doesn't mean the whole population followed that example.
Thank you very much for the site, I will go have a look-see.

The ancient Romans didn't mind adopting people in their family, sometimes even grown up men.
Different cultures, different times.
Besides, who says Aku won't try having more sons once married to Nauja? At least she's proven she can make boys (or maybe it's him who can only make daughters, ha ha!)

true and I seem to recall that some native american tribes when conducting raids on other tribes would oftentimes take captured children and claim them as their own and in the eyes of the tribe they were considered their children in fact and legally not just " that kid I stole from Bob's tribe down the street thar "

sorry erhm...anthropological and historical musings makes my inner world-building nerd all gleeful :B

also you might take into consideration the fact that what the clan down the block does may be different from what this clan does even though they are all technically Water Tribe.

who knows maybe he's starting a new trend heh. MULTIPLE WIVES. ALL THE RAGE, KIDS

I hope to see more of him in the story

After watching Samurai Jack, I knew that Aku fellow was hiding something. ;)

A few suggestions for the girl's name:
Jul. 5th, 2009 01:07 am (UTC)
Ha ha! Aku is actually a shortened version of his full name. But I think Samurai Jack may have crept into my subconscious there.
Yuna- I'd keep thinking Final Fantasy X
Jul. 5th, 2009 12:18 am (UTC)
I never quite know what to say in comments, but you know I'm riveted to this story :)
Jul. 5th, 2009 01:07 am (UTC)

Me draw fanart sometime because me fan of you even if me never seen show.

Last night, me also find old drawing of Gargoyle you did back at Cinar. Me scan for you if you want.

Me stop talking like cro-magnon now.

I'm sorry, but I have a hard time believing you could do one bad drawing, let alone a million!

I have done my share, and keep doing plenty.
The recycling bag is full, believe me.
And so many deleted on photoshop- blah!

Payu u so vengeful

love how this whole thing is paneled so beautifully in variation of the character's faces asdkfjdklfj

Also, when I make up Watertribe characters I use a variety of not just Inuit names but Native american names plus some japanese if they don't sound too complicated.

Here are some nice ones
"Nuna" means: wild goose, since I noticed that "Nauja" means seagull? (not sure)
"Niabi" or "Nibi/Niba" means "young fawn"
"Una" meaning "remember"
Jul. 5th, 2009 06:56 am (UTC)
That boy has a whole lot of pent-up anger. Zhao is not helping.

Nibi...Nibi sounds cute. Nibi sounds right.
I'll have to sleep on it and say it out loud a few times, see if it sticks. Thank you again for your suggestions! That is very appreciated.

You're very welcome, it's an honor enough that you'd take suggestions! I'm glad I could help. ^3^

Arson? It is an awful lot of smoke. My first thought was Azula.
Jul. 5th, 2009 06:52 am (UTC)
Your first thought would be very close to the track.

Ha! Lala doesn't leave much to chance, does she?
Jul. 5th, 2009 09:43 am (UTC)
Good stuff! (..as always.)

I know I sound as a creep asking, but I really would like to find a picture were you have drawn yourself....

I actually appear here:
Talking to Arluk and shooting down his plans.

Thank you!

I'll be a bit slow. But as soon as the fanproject is done, you'll be the first to see it ;-)

Perhaps it is most of the foundation why he hates Zhao so much to begin with (he has other reasons to hate him by now, ha ha).
Awww, he feels he still has a link to his father by hating the same man.
Jul. 5th, 2009 03:11 pm (UTC)
I love those kids... !

Jul. 5th, 2009 04:21 pm (UTC)
my sister suggested Likka for the girls name :)

I'm soooo addicted to your comics! :)
Jul. 5th, 2009 05:08 pm (UTC)
Thank you for continuing to read my Zhao ramblings, ha ha!
Likka...another good name suggestions. Big thanks to your sister. Another one I'll have to test out aloud, see if it clicks.
Jul. 5th, 2009 10:36 pm (UTC)
Oh Zhao, your bad luck is one of a kind. I think that proper saying for this situation is: to fall out of the frying pan into the fire. Quite literally.

But ohboy, I like this ship! It's exciting! Curse you, cliffhangers, cuuurse youuuuu! *shakes fist dramatically*
Jul. 6th, 2009 11:12 pm (UTC)
oooh name tiem. I love this part of writing! here's a few...the internets tell me they are actual Inuit names

Buniq-sweet daughter
Immuyak-butter (makes me think butterball, an adorable fat little baby <3)
Qilaq-sky or heaven

Much sympathy for funks and art-grumblings glad to hear it is lifting! But eh all the truly great ones go through bouts of funks and disgruntlement and those bouts are not worth a tinker's damn. I've been working my way very slowly through the comic from the beginning for a while now and found it keeping at consistent levels of pure unadulterated awesome :) and each new page just reaffirms the fact. I do not doubt that animators know how to bust hump
Jul. 7th, 2009 04:03 am (UTC)
Oh oh, that doesn't look good. I wonder if Zhao sinked that boat or if it even is Li-Yi's boat.

Great pages!
Jul. 10th, 2009 05:55 pm (UTC)
Hurrah! More Water Tribe! ♥ (And all the usual delight over your composition and facial expressions. There's something almost Miyazaki about the girl's face as she shouts at Payu...)

If we're playing the name game, I rather like Kanut (white goose, to match her mother the seagull, and a name she can grow into, when she's not so little and cute anymore--also allows for Nauja to call her a silly little goose and mean it). ♥

Other than that, Sesi is one of the many words for snow that sounds most like a name, and Nukka means "little sister" though I think Nauja would be a bit more creative than that. I suppose Kanut is still my vote. ^_^

Maybe Miya for the girl? (Or Mya or Mia...there's lots of ways to spell it.)
