Clocks a tickin'

Deadline for official comic coming in real fast. Work coming along well. Still...
Will soon be moving again, and still so much stuff to do.

I do those Water Tribe pages to unstress me somewhat. So na!

Guh, this fight scene is harder to do. Ah well, leave it as is, come back to it later if I ever clean that part up. Let's just work towards getting part 3 done.

Ack! I have no idea where this is going! Truly, a sign of an amazing artist and storyteller!
Oct. 21st, 2007 05:08 am (UTC)
Awww, thank you! *blushes*
As to where it is going: it will either go Kablooie, or not.
Depending if all the explosives are found in time.

Either what I'm seeing is that he's gonna make it, or he's toast. My brain is rattling with suspense! >D
Oct. 21st, 2007 02:56 pm (UTC)
Seeing as much fire could be involved, "toast" is the perfect word to use.

*does the incredibly giddy dance-of-new-Water-Tribe-pages*

Yowch, Zhao's really taking quite a beating, isn't he? I actually winced when he ran straight into that fist.

Then again from the looks of the last panel, he's giving as good as he gets. Gah. and then there's that whole bomb issue. This is most definitely NOT lacking in suspense O_O
Oct. 21st, 2007 03:00 pm (UTC)
Zhao's karma is catching up with him.
He's the kind "you hit me, I'll hit back harder". So definitely trying to return blow for blow.
Oct. 21st, 2007 07:52 am (UTC)
Hey, good luck with the deadline! Awesome fight scenes! Can really see the feel the physics of the whole thing (hope that makes sense)..Zhao's plans never seem to go right..
Just a question. I'm still kinda a newbie so just wanna know, when drawing these comics (official or just for fun), do you write/plan out the story first then make thumbnails of the comic panels or...? Because translating stories into readable comic panels are a little problematic sometimes..
Thank You!
Oct. 21st, 2007 03:05 pm (UTC)
If it is an official comic, very often I'm given a script to work from (unless very very rare exceptions).
If it is short, I go straight to thumbnail. I it is long...like insanely long, I need to write down story notes with the main points: "characters will do this, then A happens leading to B". What you are seeing here ARE thumbnails of sort. Very detailed ones. I've also got the chicken scratches thumbnails, usually drawn in the subway and that helps settle quickly an idea. If a panel is a problem, I may try 3 or 4 different angle, see what works, or at least keep the best until I figure out something better.

Go Zhao! Smash that bastard's face until it's pulp! GOOOOO!!!!!

Oct. 21st, 2007 03:07 pm (UTC)
He totally would listen to you, but there's another guy that need taken care of first.
Oh, and ship might blow up to.
Oct. 21st, 2007 09:12 am (UTC)
I didn't know "crush" was an action sound.

Oct. 21st, 2007 09:13 am (UTC)
also very nice pages as usual.

The other pages are awesome (fight scenes are so hard!) but that panel... yeah... *squee*
Oct. 21st, 2007 03:10 pm (UTC)
Hehe, he can block attacks in a smexy way ;)
Oct. 21st, 2007 01:41 pm (UTC)
Eeeee! Squeeeeee! Ooooo!

Slight editing on p. 150: "Explosive" should be "Explosives." If you don't mean for Mr. Baldy to have slightly eccentric english (which, well, he could; maybe he's from the colonies or something!), I'd rephrase to "Tell me where the explosives are!"

His second word-bubble there is just a little weird, no help for it that I can see that wouldn't destroy the impact of "THERE ARE BOMBS ON SHIP! TELL OR GET FLAMED!" So I'd say keep it; it gets the point across, and if it's a little odd... He's upset! he just now managed to find Zhao! He wants information now!

And yes, that whole p. 151 rocks. He learned the more protective water-tribe stances, woo!!
Oct. 21st, 2007 03:14 pm (UTC)
Mr.Baldy learned his english from me, which may explain all the eccentricities and then some...oh my! He's french canadian! Noooooooo!

I feel kind of bad, because I always look up your artwork here and on dA, but I never take the chance to comment very often. This stuff is AWESOME AU - the artwork is immense, and the story is an absolute joy. Please keep writing and drawing, because I love this story!!
Oct. 21st, 2007 03:19 pm (UTC)
Thank you very much for dropping by and reading these moments of Zhao madness. Very appreciated, glad you enjoy.
Oct. 21st, 2007 02:41 pm (UTC)
Totally, totally brilliant.

And it says something about how much you've made us all like Zhao that we're cheering him on, rather than snickering and saying "serve you right" as he gets a thumping from Firebenders. :)
Oct. 21st, 2007 03:21 pm (UTC)
What does it say about me being gleefully happy that he gets a nice punch in the face and enjoys drawing it. Hmmm...
Oct. 21st, 2007 02:41 pm (UTC)
I love this comic. :)

Also, we're on for lunch. I'll meet you at noon!
Oct. 21st, 2007 03:23 pm (UTC)
Excellent, I'll be there :)
Oct. 21st, 2007 03:36 pm (UTC)
good luck with your deadline!!

i love how your art /moves/, and how balanced your panels are. :takes notes for future comic endeavors:

and purely, purely fangirl: you make zhao so hot. gah!
Oct. 21st, 2007 08:31 pm (UTC)
Thanks for the good luck wishes.
Haha, Zhao doesn't need my help to be hot ;)
Oct. 21st, 2007 03:52 pm (UTC)
Weird to see Zhao using tai chi since it seems completely against his personality. He -has- been corrupted!
Oct. 21st, 2007 08:33 pm (UTC)
He doesn't know a lot- just a few basic things. He never had the patience to learn more, plus it's really waterbender stuff (which he doesn't do at all).

I bet it was a waterbender who thought it would be funny ironic to each him a thing or two ;)
Oct. 21st, 2007 04:39 pm (UTC)
Woo, worse and worse for Zhao.

I can't help wondering why the two attackers aren't bending on the last two pages.

The action in the middle of the last page feels a bit awkward-- Zhao is falling in the middle frame but in the next frame he's grabbed prettyboy's cloak and has enough leverage to throw him.

I can only hope the 'crush' sound effect is that of a skull and not just steam pipes. =)
Oct. 21st, 2007 08:36 pm (UTC)
The attackers were a bit too close to each other- they could risk firebending in each other's faces (not good).
Yeah, not happy with the transition- I wanted Zhao to grab the cloak as he fell, and use that force to throw pretty boy around.
Oct. 21st, 2007 06:52 pm (UTC)

I simply love your second to last page! His expression and stance in the final frame are just awesome. You do a really good job at showing movement and force, I feel every single blow these guys are taking! Amazing job! I wish you the best in getting all your work down!

Zhao on the 5th page in the 3rd panel: "Bring it." >D
Oct. 21st, 2007 08:43 pm (UTC)
Thanks! Last page feels a bit so-so, but that's ok. I will fix it eventually...maybe...who knows.
And if Zhao can't flee, he'll fight :D
Oct. 21st, 2007 07:04 pm (UTC)
Woot! Awesome fight scene! Zhao fights dirty. ^_~

I really like the action going on so far. The anticipation is making me anxious for more. Once part three is done will the Water Tribe AU be over, or will we be treated to more in the life of Zhao?
Oct. 21st, 2007 08:46 pm (UTC)
Against two firebenders, Zhao will pull every trick he can. Dirty fighting accepted.
After part three, I intend to take a small break and rework stuff from part one and maybe part 2. I'll then need to make sense of events in part four, then it will be over.
Oct. 21st, 2007 08:55 pm (UTC)
ohgodyes! :>
More please *hands the plate*. This comic has been my crack since I learned about it from you :D. It's like a good movie - you want to watch it again and again in case missing something.
Ah. deadlines... wait... what's a deadline? :P This word doesn't exist in dictionary of artist unless, it's like, two nights before it and all work has to be squeezed in that time period... <<''
Good luck tho, but since you're not-so-human being ;) you'll manage to success as easily as Superman leaps over a building. Can't wait to see more Wataa tribe Zhao goodness... :>
Oct. 21st, 2007 09:10 pm (UTC)
Haha, I'll hand you another portion soon enough, just digest these first while I cook another batch ;)
Neh, deadlines are something we are aware of weeks in advance but don't do anything about, hoping the last minute panic will be fuel enough to finish the work.
I wish I could leap over tall buildings. Could be fun.
Oct. 22nd, 2007 12:20 am (UTC)
Woah - still looks pretty great! I like the use of closeups in between the action. It might be nice to have some smoke coming off Zhao's clothes (especially his cloak), particularly after pg 149.
Must be really tough "choregraphing" a tight fight scene like this. Do you plan it all out ahead of time? And how to you get such intense action poses - any flailing around in front of the mirror? :)
Oct. 22nd, 2007 02:52 am (UTC)
Haha, smoke coming soon!
It is freakin' hard, and it still isn't quite working yet. But that's what these pages are for.
And yes, there is flailing around involved.
Oct. 22nd, 2007 05:46 am (UTC)
Oh. My. God. I just found this tonight, and I'm blown away. I've seen you on DevArt before, so I knew you were a talented artist, but this shows such a level of pacing, movement, and overall storytelling that I never anticipated. I'm really not able to give a good review right now, because I'm still reveling in the absolute joy it was to read this story. Wow.

Let's just say that I never really liked Zhao before. Now I'm making squeaky little noises of delight when I see him in an (absolutely amazing, by the way) Tai Chi/Waterbending stance. I'm converted.

I'm going to have to reread this when I don't have massive deadlines of my own. Maybe reread it a few times.

Oct. 22nd, 2007 02:29 pm (UTC)
Welcome aboard this insane Zhao-fest (why Zhao? I don't know, I just roll around with it).
Thank you verymuch for your kind words- this is still very much a work in progress. If you see anything that could be fixed- worked out better, let me know. I will soon start re-working part one.
(and Zhao does very bad water bending stances ;) )

I'll be very intressted in what's going to happen next. I always find it hard to get this "The place is gonna explode!" scenarios feel 'real'. Since well, often people are stressing on that the explosion is comeing and then they can talk and fight for ages!.

But I have faith in that you can pull if of Rufftoon, and I'll be very intrested in how ;-)

I really like the face closeup on Zaoh on page 151. What amazes me is that with such ease (it seems at least) you give the characters exacly the right faces. It's not like they all are drawn by the same model and just change hair, they are actually different!

Well that's me for now. I gotta get back to work :-P
Oct. 22nd, 2007 02:42 pm (UTC)
I don't know if I can pull it off- that's part of the exercise.
I know one thing: they can't talk a lot and can't fight forever or I'll just blow the whole lot right underneath their feet for being to talkative.

Ain't always easy to draw the characters on model. I mean, Zhao isn't too bad, but the others tend to morph and evolve as I keep drawing them. I'm gonna have to make characters notes and proper model sheets at some point, or I'll keep going all over the place!

Favorite Panel: End of 149 and 152. They demonstrate 2 of the best rules to live by. Always watch where you’re going, and don’t wear capes, especially when fighting. XD

And as always, you are made of awesome.
Oct. 22nd, 2007 02:49 pm (UTC)
I try to live by rule #1 (watch where you're going, which is true 70% of the time though I still bump into things).
As for the capes, I keep thinking of Edna in the Incredibles: "NO CAPES!"
She was right.

Man, these pages are so awesome!! I like how on 147 he's hardly listening to the threats XD and that running into the fist panel on 149 was painful to read! His poor face ;__;

I'm pretty sure we found out that you are certifiably insane around 100 pgs, 50+ additional pages is just icing on the (dare i say it) cake
Oct. 22nd, 2007 05:27 pm (UTC)
Thank you very much *blushes*
He ain't listening to the threats of that young one, not when he know he's got a big explosion coming up soon.
As for the punching panel, it was hurtful and strangely satisfying to do.
Mmmmm....50+ pages icing...*drool*
