Just a few pages...

...to break the monotony of my days.
Though I guess it is pretty repetitive that I keep posting those Water Tribe pages here.
I have no life.

These pages almost got cut. Almost. But I decided against it at the last minute. We need to see somehow a bit inside Zhao's brains in different situations (meaning, non battle ones).
It's just very very awkward to do.

I'm very glad that you did this. Even though I can understand it being awkward I really think it's necessary to get a little more inside Zhao's head from time to time. Heheh and I simply ahore and adore his gruffness towards her XD Excellent job as always!

Doing the stuff inside his head that is not battle related...is hard.
He still has no manner.

Indeed, however I think you did it splendidly. You were able to easily sum his feelings and reasons for his harsh actions with just a few panels. It's really quite amazing how well you are able to flow these different themes into each other.

Awww, you're too kind *blushes*

But Zhao being Zhao, it really is far more likely that he'd tell her to shut up rather than be the recipient of her confidences. So I'd say it's entirely in character. As are his feelings of embarrassment rather than gratitude. So AAA+++.

Aw, thank you.
Zhao is just a bad listener, I guess. Unless you talk of stuff that actually interest him.

Repetition can be nice. ^_^ I would rather have a chunk of days the same than having a new crisis/job/drama every day!

I am with Zhao, it can be embarrassing when others do things for you. Especially when you are used to doing for yourself.

Seen that way, hurray for repetition!

You are right- even early on, when Zhao was still all confusticated, it just felt wrong to him that he couldn't just...take care of himself or his whole life. At the same time, he was realising that sometimes, he had no choice but to follow other's lead and help.

New toy: Nappy-Time Zhao. ^_^ It looks like he might be in for A Moment. ;-)

Mostly because I need a nap right now.

That's very in-character of Zhao actually. I certainly don't see him thanking anybody for what they've done. :D

That's what makes him adoreable. X3

I love Nauja's expression at the end of the first page, just awesome. Not a woman to get on the wrong side of.

She almost bit him again right there. But that would have been repetitive, and biting is usually not in her nature. But she'll do the cold stare rather well.

Awwwwwww haha what a bastard... I do so enjoy characters that fall asleep sitting up!

I like how you handled that big panel on the last page, it shows off the costume nicely while still retaining the setting and a sense of presentation...

You're right, he could certainly stand a bit more chomping on XD

Having fallen asleep sitting up a few times, all I can say is...urk! Neck pain!

No matter how much chomping or kicks he gets, he's never gonna change (much). Ah well, he's asking for it.

*is tempted to go hide life from rufftoon so there will be more water tribe*

I'm glad you had these pages, too. Poor Nauja. She's holding her engagement necklace, isn't she... *sniffle*

I love how you hide Zhao's (sleeping) face with the word balloon there, on p. 109.

Zhao, look beyond your own emotions and give that woman a hug. You're the closest thing to familiar she's got right now. *sigh* But he probably won't. Selfish bastich.

Eh- ho! I need those life tidbits!
Yup, she is holding her engagement necklace. Not much use for it now.
Hmmm...don't think Zhao is much of a hug person- getting or giving.
Oh wait, he did console her a tiny bit in Lao's ship. But that was to get her to talk. And now he wants her to shut up.
Make up your mind, Zhao!!

*reluctantly gives life-tidbits back*

*sniffles more at engagement necklace* (Zhao, you jerk, ask about her kids! Ask if you can find any of them when you get out of this mess!)

*wants to bite Zhao*

Heh. Nauja is pretty awesome, though if I were her I think I would have "accidently" water-whipped him at this point. Or maybe frozen a certain part of him...

*ahem*

Small edit: Second page, third panel starting with "it is ironic... and I didn't even had..." <- Should be "have".

Freezing bits of him would be more cruel...and more efficient than just a little water whip. Hehehe.
Ooh, thanks for the correction. Making note of it. Will correct it when I have the time.

I'm glad you didn't cut this. It doesn't read as awkward at all, and it does give some really good insight. It's also a good break from the external/action-oriented stuff that's been happening for a while - not that lots of action is bad! But it's nice pacing.
Using the rounded panels works well - I remember you doing it before, so it's very clear but subtle.
I've really been impressed by how you've dealt with Zhao's character throughout this, especially fleshing out his personality and past. And this sorta stuff could easily get angsty/maudlin/etc, but you never let it veer into that. It's amazing how much depth you've created and how convincing it is.

Thank you- glad to know the little slow down is not breaking the pacing much. Ouf.
Hmmm...I think Zhao is going to have a little bit of angsty-maudlin episode coming up. Though I guess you could call it simple frustration.

Sorry I haven't been commenting on your stuff lately. I looked over it all and it's fantastic. I'm really happy to see you included these pages. The scene with Nauja holding her necklace is very touching.

Congrats on 100+ pages! Your stamina is stunning!

Don't apologize, I'm ready to bet you are hyper busy with school and a thousand other things. Glad to still have you aboard on the Zhao ride (wait...that sounds just wrong!)
As for 100+ pages, it ain't stamina, it is madness!!

"It actually doesn't look too bad on him."
No, it really doesn't! ^_^

Poor Nauja. I loved her expression at Zhao's comment about exotic animals (referring back to last post). I think that if Zhao thought a little less often, he'd probably be happier.

Zhao think less? Well, I guess it depends less of what. If he thought less about himself, and war, and glory, and...oh my, this would be a tall order.

oh man! Zhao's a meanie! I love the "direction" of these pages, it might just be me but I think you're staging and panel layouts are becoming more dramatic! It's so good~

Zhao is, and always will be, a meanie. Can't quite scrape that off of him.
Doing these pages at fast speed has been extremely good practice. I don't know if I've gotten better, but it doesn't hurt to just keep doing these.

Even the other Water Tribe folks had to agree; it doesn't look half bad on him.
No problem with the friend thing- welcome aboard the Zhao madness journal thingie (let's face it, it is all about him these days around here)

I'm really glad you didn't decide to cut these pages..I get how awkward it is to place war monger Zhao in this sort of situation but your handling of it is just done so beautifully..those 3 pages really said quite a lot..lovely storytelling!

Thank you, glad to know it worked ok.
Zhao outside the context of battle is a bit hard to handle. Others would do it better, but ah well...is for fun.

*hits Zhao upside the head with a frozen salmon for his insensitivity* She just lost her family you git - let her talk! But I completely understand this being IC for him, and it IS kinda cute in a way. At the very least, Nauja seems to accept him for who he is. And he does realize he's being a git, so there's hope there, too.

I love how three-dimensional you're making all these characters.

Oh, he just doesn't care- much. And I don't think he fully realizes how big of a jerk he is.
So I guess you'll have to keep hitting him with that frozen salmon.

Harsh, Zhao. Very harsh. And yet, I find myself giving you ten points for being one of the first writers I've ever seen let one character cut off another character in the middle of a backstory monologue. Way to give convention a kick in the shorts. :)

Thank you very much for your kind words *blushes*
There are still many things to fix up, art wise, as these are thumbnails. Continuity glitches, details to add, etc...
I didn't want to change Zhao...much. He is much better as a jerk than anything else. But new events have influenced him.
As to how he got adopted, it nags a bit at me too. Some of that is actually adressed a bit more in the upcoming post.
Let's not forget the tribe debated for a while how to handle the situation. It was not just a few hours, but weeks of arguments back and forth. If I return and rework the first part, I will try and make this a bit clearer.
No problem with adding me, welcome aboard the Zhao madness cruise yacht :D
