Just passing by

Not much to report:
The Banquet was visually beautiful, poetry on screen. Story had hints of Shakespeare in terms of court intrigue and the way the plot unfolded. Slowly moving at times, but I didn't mind. Ending...leaves something to be desired, but it does work in a way.

Comic work is moving forward at a steady pace. Should be mostly done by Monday, with one page to be approved- I'm preparing two versions of the last page, as I am playing around with ideas and layouts. Let's see what the editor prefers.

Starting part 3 of the Water Tribe AU. Had actually done that page two weeks ago. Just tweaked it a bit.

Whoa. Zhao respects Tui and La so much now. D: cool.

Hard to say if it is respect or fear. One thing for sure, he believes in these two spirits, and he wants them on his side if he's going to be doing so much sailing around.

Fearful respect is better than "I am Zhao, Moon-killer! Phe4r me!" -- the ability to be something other than a megalomaniac may be the saving of him yet.

(I'm going awwwwww at him here, and I'm not even quite sure why. Silly rest-of-crew. If someone's been eaten by the Ocean Spirit and spat back out again... Do not mock!)

"If someone's been eaten by the Ocean Spirit and spat back out again... Do not mock!)"
Yeah, but who's going to believe him (except Iroh and the Firelord)?

None that we know. Or at least, none that speak coherently of the whole thing.

this has nothing to do with anything you posted:
I saw ratatouille today and I thought about you and that time you mentioned seeing a rat and thinking about the movie, why do I remember those stuff, I don't know.
rufftoon
Jul. 8th, 2007 05:41 am (UTC)
Haha, oh yeah, the rats of Burbank. Way more of these critters than I thought...and yet, couldn't help but think of Ratatouille every time.
The food critic is such an awesome character- so sad he has so little screen time, but that's the way the stoy is made. I don't see how it could have worked well otherwise.

The film critic was definitely by favorite charcter! Such a great character! XD Loved his little skull shaped typewritter too!

I didn't notice the skull-shaped typewriter! I was too busy cracking up over the coffin-shaped room. I'll have to be on alert next time.

yes, I loved Ego too, so morbid and... like a dead man XD

I actually liked Linguini too, you know, kind of reminded me of Fry from Futurama! :P

Firebenders better freaking respek. I'd freak if the antithesis of my powers/ nation were surrounding me for miles, personally.

Comics!!

Jul. 8th, 2007 05:49 am (UTC)
You know you're right.
Guess that's why the fire nation is not (too) superstitious- it would stop too many of their people joining the navy, and they want a big powerful one to roam the oceans.

Jul. 8th, 2007 06:04 am (UTC)
Incorporating himself with Water Tribe Traditions despite knowing he is originally Fire Nation? Awesomely brilliant.. He knows he owes the Ocean Spirit his life..
rufftoon
Jul. 8th, 2007 03:18 pm (UTC)
You summed it up pretty well- and a big chunk of his memory is water tribe now. He can't dismiss certain traditions (especially when surrounded by vast expanses of water)

Jul. 8th, 2007 08:44 pm (UTC)
Oh no need to apologise- believe me, I'm still learning how to use the dang thing. At some point, I may be comfortable enough to do those LJ cuts and proper linkage to other people's journals. Damn my poor knowledge of webstuff!
trishna87
Jul. 8th, 2007 08:49 pm (UTC)
Ah with LJ cuts, i can guide you to an FAQ that'll help :D http://www.livejournal.com/support/faq.bml
personally doing that in Rich Text Editor mode felt easier :)

as for linking to people in LJ i think the code is
_________ the username being there in the place of the _____

i have to say its kinda easier than DA journal updates.. cos there u have to write the HTML codes urself.. which i suck at XD
trishna87
Jul. 8th, 2007 08:50 pm (UTC)
wow an actual username with _____ i wouldn't have guessed.

SO the ACTUAL code is
< lj user="rufftoon" > except get rid of the extra spaces in between :D

Oooh, thanks for the pointers- I will keep these notes and experiment next time I post :)

no problem :D glad to help :)
do note that the extra space between lj and user is legit XD just the extra spaces between the < and the > should be deleted :D

open angle bracket lj-cut text="" close angle bracket. Between the quotation marks, you can put any text you like, so long as it does not include quotation marks. ;-)

For the hotlink, open angle bracket a href="post-link-here" close angle bracket. No space between the angle bracket and the command next to it, of course. And for the end of the clickie/hotlink, you put the name of the site and end it with open angle bracket /a close angle bracket.

Heh. Maybe I'll show you using parentheses instead of the angle brackets.

(lj-cut text="text here")

I love how this one page alone can show how much Zhao has changed, even if much of what he does rings true to who he used to be. Wonderful job!

So what was in the bowl? Holy water? Beer? Pee? XD

Jul. 8th, 2007 07:49 am (UTC)
I swear it looks like he's sacrificing milk. Or amazake. XD The composition's beautiful, though. Prettiest milk sacrifice ever.
rufftoon
Jul. 8th, 2007 03:24 pm (UTC)
It is something pretty close to amazake. Not quite the same recipe, but pretty darn close.
Thanks!
tobu_ishi
Jul. 9th, 2007 03:44 am (UTC)
Urgh. I know amazake's supposed to be tasty as anything, but I had a Bad Experience with it at a New Year's shrine and I can't drink it without remembering that.....flavor.

Hopefully the moon and ocean spirits enjoy it more than me! :)
rufftoon
Jul. 8th, 2007 03:23 pm (UTC)
Thanks! Zhao tends to do these little ceremonies as isolated as he can. The crew knows about it, but still...no sense to give them a show.
And yes, like the reply below, it is something in the same vein as Amazake. Not quite the same recipe, but close.

I didn't know you had an LJ! *friended*

I just finished reading all 52 pages so far of the Water Tribe AU story...I'm still amazed of how consistent the quality is considering that it's fan comic. I for one appreciate the amount of effort you're putting in this, thank you for sharing them with us :D

Can't wait for future stuffs :)

Hehe, I've got a few little hideouts all over the internet. Like a huge hide and seek game ;)
Awww, many thanks for your kind words *blushes*- these are really mostly an exercise in storytelling: rough pencils and all, page layout tests and see if I can put ideas in a readable, working orders.
(And also to get rid of these ideas sunning around in my head!)
I should try and clean a few of those one day.

Ho-ly...moly! Looks like our dear Zhao hasn't forgotten about his moments with the Water Tribe. :> Is part three more about Zhao in the sae now? :>
rufftoon
Jul. 8th, 2007 03:32 pm (UTC)
As much as he would like to forget, he can't. And there's a whole ocean he's got to sail on to remind him ;)
Part three is mostly about Zhao at sea. No old man and the sea that's for sure. No big fish in this one!

Yay for work getting done! Man, I've got my first day off this week right now and I can't tell you how nice it feels to be DONE for a little while, you know?

Oooh, offery goodness from the hands of Zhao. Stands to reason he'd show some resepect to the spirits that, you know, KINDLY DID NOT KILL HIM. >_>
rufftoon
Jul. 8th, 2007 03:35 pm (UTC)
Slowly getting work done. Ooooh, I am looking forward to some vacation time, or at least weekends of farniente (do nothing).
Zhao still has quite a few water tribe customs in his daily habits. Offering to the moon and ocean while at sea is one of them- to make sure they don't change their minds and kill him now.
Whatever seems to work.

That is so ironic to me, that Zhao is performing rituals for the moon and ocean spirits. I'll bet Yue's laughing up a storm in the Spirit World.
rufftoon
Jul. 8th, 2007 09:04 pm (UTC)
Hehe, pretty much all the spirits in the spirit world would have a good chuckle at Zhao's expense- Yue and the Ocean spirit possibly more than any others.

smart boy - i think yue appreciates the gesture. *is eagerly awaiting azula's return*

Probably the smartest move he's ever done- try to get on the good side of the spirits.
Yue would probably like a more substantial sacrifice, but she's patient...

He's still the old Zhao, and at the same time, he's picked up other...habits, I guess.
Iroh would no doubt approve, and possibly even laugh at the change :D
